Why Your State Police Exam Photo Was Rejected & How to Fix It
Last Updated: May 2026
State Police Constable and Sub-Inspector recruitments (such as UP Police, Delhi Police, Maharashtra Police, and Bihar Police) are some of the most highly competitive exams in India. Because of the massive volume of applications—often in the millions—recruitment boards use strict automated scanning to filter out incorrect applications.
One of the most devastating reasons for rejection is a poorly formatted photograph. State police boards are incredibly rigid about physical appearance in photographs. Here is why your photo may have been rejected and exactly how to fix it for your next attempt.
1. The Strict Background Color Rule
Unlike some private sector exams that allow any solid background, State Police boards strictly require a white or very light grey background.
- Common Mistake: Taking a selfie against a colored wall, a blue curtain, or outdoors. Even a light blue background, which is common in older passport photos, is frequently rejected by UP Police and Delhi Police portals.
- The Fix: You must stand against a blank white wall. If you do not have one, you can use online tools to remove your background and replace it with pure white before uploading.

Because police roles require strict physical and medical verification, the photograph must clearly show your unobstructed facial features.
- Spectacles: Even if you have a medical prescription and wear glasses every day, you must remove them for the photograph. Glare or flash reflection on the lenses will cause instant rejection.
- Facial Features: Both of your ears must be clearly visible. Your hair should not cover your eyes or the sides of your face.
- Caps and Masks: Hats, caps, and dark sunglasses are strictly prohibited. Religious headwear is generally permitted provided it does not cast a shadow over the face, but you should always check the specific state's notification.
3. The Date and Name Imprint (Crucial for UP & Bihar)
Certain state boards, particularly UP Police and Bihar Police, have a unique requirement that trips up many candidates: The photo must have the candidate's name and the date the photo was taken printed at the bottom.
- The date must prove the photo was taken within the last 3 to 6 months (depending on the notification).
- If the date is missing, or if it is written over your chest rather than on a white strip at the bottom, the application is discarded.
How to add the Date and Name easily:
You do not need to visit a studio to get this done. On ExamPhotoResizer, select the "State PSC & Police" option from the drop-down menu on the homepage. Below it, you will see two text boxes for Candidate Name and Date of Photo. Simply type them in, and our tool will automatically generate the correct white strip with black text at the bottom of your photo before downloading!
