How to Fix the "Invalid DPI" Error for UPSC & IBPS Exams

Last Updated: April 2026

If you are applying for banking exams through the IBPS portal or civil service exams via the UPSC ORA portal, you have likely encountered a highly frustrating pop-up message: "Image must be 200 DPI" or "Invalid Resolution/DPI detected."

You may have successfully resized your image to exactly under 50KB, formatted it to the correct pixel dimensions, and yet the system still flatly refuses to accept your upload. Why does this happen, and how can you fix it instantly without downloading heavy software like Adobe Photoshop?

1. What Exactly is DPI?

DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. It is a technical measurement that tells printers how sharp an image should look when printed on physical paper. Even though you are submitting a digital form, government portals enforce strict DPI rules because they eventually print your application forms, admit cards, and attendance sheets.

By default, when you take a photo with a smartphone or scan a document with a mobile app, the image is saved at 72 DPI or 96 DPI. This mismatch is what triggers the error on the exam portal.

2. The Problem with Changing DPI

The biggest issue candidates face is that changing the DPI usually requires premium desktop software. Standard tools like MS Paint or default mobile photo editors cannot alter DPI metadata. Furthermore, many online "DPI converters" compress your image so badly during the conversion process that your face becomes blurry, leading to application rejection.

🔥 1-Click DPI Fixer

You do not need Photoshop. Our free, secure browser tool injects the exact 200 or 300 DPI metadata into your image instantly without losing a single pixel of quality.

3. Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing the Error

Follow these quick steps to permanently resolve the invalid DPI error using our platform:

Step 1: Check Your File Size First

Before you change the DPI, ensure your photo is already cropped to the correct dimensions and is under the required KB limit (e.g., under 50KB for photos, under 20KB for signatures). You can use our Official Doc Resizer for this step.

Step 2: Open the DPI Fixer Tool

Navigate to the Fix 200/300 DPI card on our dashboard. You will see an option to select your required DPI target. Choose 200 DPI if you are applying for IBPS/SBI, or 300 DPI for UPSC.

Step 3: Upload and Download

Upload your image. Our tool uses client-side JavaScript to rewrite the EXIF metadata header of your JPEG file, forcibly changing the physical print resolution flag to your target DPI. Because this happens locally on your device, it is 100% private. Click "Fix DPI & Download," and your file is now ready to bypass the strict portal security.
